Yesterday I ran across a site with thumbnail photos of what inspires the artist -- vintage vases, an antique carved chair, an old tea towel, you get the idea. It occurred to me that most of my best ideas come:
when I am about to fall asleep, am actually sleeping, or when I first wake up
when I am in the shower
when I am taking a walk
when I am reading
when I am admiring another artist's work
(Thus the title of my blog.)
I have lots of resources I go back to again and again. Craft books, scrapbooking idea books, sewing patterns, anything with sweet illustrations or lettering and I can't help myself. (And I am oh-so-proud that my style has it's very own integrity, despite how much I am influenced by other artists. I used to see this as a flaw, but over the years I have seen that my work isn't diluted by this habit, it gets stronger.)
Paper, fabric, watercolor pencils -- the tools of my trade are all very inspiring.
I know, enough with the Alabama Chanin fixation already. But if I were a night owl, I'm pretty sure I would have engaged in a total wardrobe overhaul by now. This design is inspired by her techniques -- but I thought of it while reading Crossing to Safety sitting outside overlooking Lake Superior. I'd like to think I was observing nature at the time, but I think it was more my {insert blog title here}.
Thank you blog readers for sticking with me. And do let me know if you have any suggestions!
